May 5 - Celta/Celtic: Scarborough Fair (Celtic Woman)

Hoy os traigo una preciosa balada tradicional inglesa, aunque la versión que os voy a presentar es mucho más moderna. Su protagonista, Hayley Westenra, formó parte de la agrupación musical irlandesa Celtic Woman. Este grupo se formó en Dublín en 2004 para un evento concreto, pero fue tal su éxito que ha continuado hasta la actualidad. No voy a nombrar a todas sus integrantes actuales y pasadas, porque son bastantes y solamente una es quien canta en este caso.

Scarborough Fair hace gala de un recurso retórico conocido como adynaton, que proviene del griego antiguo y cuyo significado más literal es "imposibilidad". En esencia, consiste en invertir la lógica de lo real. Un ejemplo de adynaton en la vida cotidiana sería decir "cuando las ranas críen pelo" ;) . En particular, esta canción habla de diferentes tareas imposibles pedidas a alguien a quien se ama.

Si queréis conocer cómo suena la inocencia entonando esta mágica melodía, no os perdáis a Celia Pavey. También podéis encontrar la versión de estudio, pero yo me quedo con su actuación en la audición a ciegas de The Voice Australia por todo lo que es capaz de expresar en esos dos minutos. Solo hay que ver la reacción del jurado y cómo le piden que siga, porque necesitan seguir escuchándola. Por cierto, su nombre artístico es Vera Blue.

Otro grupo que toca música celta (¡y cantan en alemán!) y merece mucho la pena es Faun; recomiendo empezar por Federkleid. Si queréis algo un poco más metalero, tenéis The Garden of Earthly Delights de Apocalypse Orchestra. Y si os gusta la música celta sin letra, ya estáis tardando en escuchar Celtique Médiéval de Carlos Núñez, también llamada St Patrick's An Dro. A veces tengo la impresión de que una parte de mí realmente nació en otro lugar, porque es como si la música celta me hablase de un modo especial. Para acabar, y por conexión con esta última, os dejo Sol de Sowulo.

Today I am bringing a beautiful, traditional English ballad, although this version here will be more contemporary. Its main character, Hayley Westenra, was a member of the Irish musical ensemble Celtic Woman, which arose in Dublin in 2004 for a particular event. They were such a success that they are still active nowadays. I won't be naming all its former and current singers, since they are quite a lot, and only one sang in this case.

Scarborough Fair makes use of a figure of speech called adynaton, from the Ancient Greek language, which literal translation would be "impossibility". The idea is essentially inverting the logic of what is real. In Spain, we have "when frogs grow hair" as an example of this. In particular, this song talks about asking someone you love for some impossible tasks.

If you want to know how innocence plays this magical melody, don't miss Celia Pavey. You can also find the studio version, but I go for the blind audition for The Voice Australia because of how much she gives in just two minutes. The jury reaction is indescribable; they basically beg her to continue as they need to keep listening! By the way, she goes by Vera Blue artistically.

Another band playing Celtic music – and singing in German! – worth checking is Faun: I recommend Federkleid for starters. If you want something more metal, you have The Garden of Earthly Delights by Apocalypse Orchestra. And if you like Celtic music without lyrics, you should have already met Carlos Núñez and his Celtique Médiéval, also called St Patrick's An Dro. Sometimes it seems a part of myself was really born somewhere else, since it feels like Celtic music spoke to me in a special way. To finish, via a kind of connection with the latter, I drop Sol by Sowulo.
